Artbook re-release and storybook premiere set for late-summer/fall release

North American publisher Viz Media recently announced the release of Princess Mononoke: The First Story – a storybook featuring Hayo Miyazaki’s original concept behind the critically acclaimed film. Fans of Miyazaki’s work and Princess Mononoke in particular can experience the magic the original Princess Mononoke story made almost 20 years prior the release of the iconic film, as well as his watercolor illustrations and early character designs, which hints at inspirations for Totoro and other beloved characters.

Viz also announced the planned October re-release of The Art of Princess Mononoke – complete with new illustrations, interviews, and finished cels from the award-winning animated film.

The Art of Princess Mononoke is set for an August 2014 release and the Princess Mononoke: The First Story storybook is set to debut later in October.

An oversized, lavishly illustrated storybook featuring original watercolor art by legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, this is the original Princess Mononoke story created by Miyazaki in 1980 while he was first conceptualizing the landmark animated film that would later be released to universal acclaim seventeen years later. As an initial version of the tale, it offers a new and different perspective from the final version presented in the film. It’s been a long time, but we’re finally back!!! Well, in a manner of speaking…

First off, I wish to sincerely apologize for the extended length of time for our return. It’s been a surprisingly LONG, convoluted road that eventually lead to a bit of soul searching as to the fate of this project.

I’ve always had a long-term vision of giving our views a window-view to the various fandoms and sub-cultures. By that, I mean any community that lies outside of the mainstream – be it hobbies (e.g. cosplay, LARP, Ball-jointed dolls), alternate fashion (lolita, steampunk, etc), entertainment (anime, gaming, nerdcore, JPOP, KPOP). I also want to spotlight the various people, organizations, and industries that sponsor, hosts, and support the events that celebrate and fuel the fandoms as we know it.

After much internal debate, I came to the decision that it was time to take the next steps in realizing that vision. As such, some major changes were decided upon for both the website and organization.

You may have noticed that the site’s has a new look, a new name, and a new direction!

While the original Cosplay Hunter Gallery website did not primarily focus on cosplay, I felt that leaving the CSG name on the main banner and the cosplayhunter.com address would give the wrong impression to the project’s new direction by implying a focus on one aspect of the site.

Secondly, the site underwent a massive overhaul, including new site interface, feature page layout, and content sections. One of the first features to be implemented was the event calendar that will showcase upcoming events the OSC crew will be attending, with plans to expand the listing to show viewer-submitted events. The site’s metamorphosis was not a smooth one. There was a lot of blood, sweat, and tears during the remodeling processing – some due to my extremely limited knowledge of scripting and sight design and some due to outside factors which (on a couple of occasions) almost put an abrupt and permanent end to the site project. One casualty of the overhaul was the Hunter Galleries, which had to be taken offline due to hosting issues. Don’t worry, kiddies – the Galleries are not permanently going away! However, it will be down until a suitable solution can found.

The third major decision was to expand upon our content. The convention reports, event coverage, and reviews that were part of the original CHG website will continue, but we’re looking to step up the game by adding interviews! We want to spotlight not only the event guests and industry personalities to serve up the news that’s relevant to your interests, but we’re also planning to bring you face-to-face with the organizations *behind* the events! We’re also going to step beyond the convention center to include reviews of the outlying facilities – hotels, restaurants, photo locales. Covering a con or even is great and all, but I’ve found more and more people want to know where’s the best place to eat/sleep/get cool pics taken!

There’s an entire laundry list of goals and it may seem daunting to some, but I believe we can accomplish this (baby-steps mind you)! For now, feel free to look around and please excuse the packing crates and bubble wrap – we’re still getting the sight in order and we’ll announce updates and new features as they become available.

Welcome to the Otaku Social Calendar!
